Removing things from Ubuntu's "Places" menu

When I was editting some files on a server through a ssh connection I added the dir I was working in to the "save as" side bar. This directory turned up in Ubuntu Hoary's new "Places" menu as well, and after that secretly drove me crazy. Everytime I logged in, everytime Nautilus started, it asked me to log in to the server. I couldn't figure out for a while what was causing it, until I saw that directory there. Then I couldn't figure out how to remove it from the "Places" menu. It was no longer in my "save" dialog. After googling for some time I found it was the .gtk_bookmarks file in my home dir that contained this info (and only that one, not the "Home" and the server connections and such). I removed the line, saved the file (gnome panel crashed) and voila, no more password buggings!

Ubuntu groups and user privileges - How I lost access to audio and automounting

Yesterday I tried to configure my users and group so that I could have a dir in /var/www/ that both I and apache could access. I make a group 'www' with the groupadd command, and added myself to it with 'usermod -G www myusername' After that, I couldn't play audio anymore through XMMS. It said I had no access or the audio was blocked.. Surprised, I figured it must have had something to do with the user/group things since that's all I'd changed. I went to user and groups in the administration panel and yes, there was the setting, "access to audio devices" was unchecked, as well as the 'automatic access to external storage devices'

Printing to a Epson AcuLaser C900 over the network in Ubuntu

Today the next challenge arised. A year and a half ago, we bought a 'cheap' Epson color laser printer, that only supported Windows printing. It's hooked up to the Windows 2000 PC that is also the router and firewall for the network I'm on. Back then I didn't think it much of a problem that it was basically a 'windows only' printer, but today it hit me... It would be really annoying if I couldn't print.
I fired up the printing dialog (System->Administration) and tried "Add new printer". All the AcuLasers where there, except of course the C900, the only one who doesn't know any 'real' printer languages....

Ubuntu Install part II

After having installed Ubuntu on 2 of my own systems I was missing something when I went back to my work system on Windows. I wanted my Ubuntu back! So I decided to install it there too. It would only take a day.. right?

Installing Ubuntu Part I

After having Ubuntu installed on my laptop for a few months now I decided to give it a try installing it on my home desktop system. Werner (my boyfriend) was kind enough to let me resize his (reasonably clean) windows partition so I could install it in the space created. So the story begins....
